The reactions seem over the top. But the decision does show a lack of respect for the source material—and so, not a good sign for the success of the project.

I think having Meryl Streep voice Aslan is the least of the worries for this adaptation. She has only cast females in lead roles. She typically frames female characters as strong and capable and male characters as imperative to the story but more focused on their fragility and stunted growth. The fact that this is going to be a rock opera with a strong foundation and footing in David Bowie's work will further distance this from the book's original intent.

Doesn’t sound like it has much to do with Narnia or The Magician’s Nephew. One of these “based on the book by…” adaptations that is more like “vaguely inspired by the book by….”
