in a way, I’m glad Trump gave some attention to this issue but on the whole, I wish he would not talk about values and ethics or religion at all.

  • When he speaks about values and ethics and moral principles, Trump is speaking what is, for him, a foreign language. (Even more so, when theology is involved: There’s a reason we don’t normally say man is made in the “holy” image of God.)
  • These topics are tainted by his advocacy. They’re better off without his endorsement. I’m in favor of his acting at a policy level to uphold conservative (and often Christian) values, but we’re better off if he does not try to be a cheerleader for them.
  • I’m reminded of the old adage, “With friends like these…”
