Along the same lines, my mother understandably became even more interested in spiritual things as she was fighting cancer (she died in 2009), and it always fascinated me that the books she read were from evangelical publishing houses—nothing from the “Upper Room” or other Methodist publishers. It seems, per the author’s comment about Spong, that there are only so many ways you can say “I don’t believe” before the whole deal gets tiresome. It also is not what goes over well with a stage 4 colon cancer patient, to put it mildly.

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
