Why is that even a thing?

Why is that even a thing?

It’s not like Christians have readily recognized symbols already like a “cross”. Why wouldn’t we need a flag, too? :^)

One of my big pet peeves with AWANA is all those pledges and the prominent display of the U.S. flag. Love my country as much as anyone, but don’t terribly feel the need to pledge allegiance to that which is not central, like the flag or the AWANA flag.

In our AWANA we dropped the pledge to the American flag, and do one to the Christian flag.

It’s quite ecumenical. Surprised it’s so popular in the independent fundamental churches… probably few know!

I know the flag has ecumenical roots. But, I found it to be a neat teaching tool for the kids, and it stands for something. It doesn’t have to be an ecumenical symbol. It works well as a teaching tool.

  • Red cross = Jesus’ substitutionary, sacrificial death (passive obedience)
  • White background = Jesus holy life on our behalf (active obedience)
  • Blue = baptism, which pictures the new birth and entrance into God’s family and citizenship in His coming kingdom

It’s worked well for me. I bought one for the platform at church last year. I’ve moved the American flag from the platform several times, but someone keeps putting it back mysteriously. I’ve settled for lowering the American flag below the level of the Christian flag, and I’m content with that stalemate for now. Apparently, so is my mysterious adversary …
