Gas 'n' God - This church built atop a gas station promises to "equip you for the next stage in your life’s journey."

Back when the Sunoco that occupies the space was an Exxon, locals sometimes referred to the complex as “Saint Exxon.” The gas station is known for being somewhat cramped and claustrophobic, but it is also locally beloved, and Virginians have developed another clever nickname for it: “gas ‘n’ god.”

I know gas stations do a great job preventing fire from being a monster issue—google “gas station fires” and you’ll be amazed at who does not get hurt in the videos—but still I shudder at the notion of a church built above hundreds of thousands of pounds of gasoline. Just sayin’.

On the light side, I’m glad that “gas-n-God” doesn’t refer to the potlucks there, per the old joke about Stuckey’s.

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
