Bringing the Bible’s teaching to bear on many aspects of life (including social media usage, not all that far removed from teaching on gossip) is definitely the province of the church, and would be excellently handled in SS classes or similar. However, those things are certainly not necessary in order to simply join the church.
There are good reasons to have membership classes talking about the doctrines and mission of the church, and a short version of letting people know what to expect, and what will be expected of them, but given the Bible’s timeline of saved, baptized, and added to the church, we certainly don’t want to overcomplicate this process.
