It’s interesting that they destroyed the old altar and put a potty there, but soil samples do not indicate that they actually used it. if that is representative of what really went on, I’ve got to wonder if they thought they could get away with destroying it and symbolically defiling it, but not with the more literal defilement. Pure speculation on my part, of course, but could it illustrate the limitations a Godly king had on his actions, or at least the unease his soldiers might have carrying out his orders?
