A Modest Proposal: Character Counts, Starting in 2018

“[I]f partisans endorse the unspoken but clear message ‘We’ll always protect the unethical ones on our side,’ it guarantees they’ll get more unethical behavior. They’re sending the signal to all aspiring leaders within their movement that they would rather live with bad behavior on their own side than give the other side a ‘win.’” … . What if there was a broad political agreement that, starting in 2018, character counts again for everybody on both sides?

Thanks for the fix, Tyler.

I think Geraghty is dreaming, but that’s better than despairing I suppose. But though “both sides” are not going recommit to character, it should be obvious who ought to go first—without waiting for the other. But “the right” has pretty much sold out to its worst elements, so I’m not holding my breath.

Views expressed are always my own and not my employer's, my church's, my family's, my neighbors', or my pets'. The house plants have authorized me to speak for them, however, and they always agree with me.
