Did RSV mistranslate arsenokoitēs as 'homosexuals'? Examining the claims of the film '1946'

If “arsenokoitai” is supposed to mean just shrine prostitution or pederasty, we would expect similar phrasings regarding the far more numerous female shrine prostitutes and/or standard prostitutes. But that said, the word “porneia” is used, which although it does refer to prostitution, had come to mean any sex outside of marriage in the Hellenic Jewish context.

Since the parallel phrase is broad and refers to anything outside of marriage in a heterosexual context, we’d anticipate the same spread of meaning in a homosexual context. Moreover, Paul for whatever reason uses two words to describe male homosexuality—malakoi and arsenokoitai—corresponding roughly to the rather coarse terms used today, “bottom” and “top”.

“1946” is more or less hoping that their readers either do not know, or do not care, that Paul’s writing mirrors not cultic prostitution, but contemporary practice in homosexuality.

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
