….and I’m torn. There is a very real place where the church needs to own up to its history, and that does include a fair amount of overt racism, including a good amount in the church after the Civil Rights Act was passed. So it’s not like you need to go to nursing homes to find people who remember. On the flip side, the document there does seem to take a fair amount of inspiration from CRT advocates, including a disturbing degree of emphasis on the use of “disparate impact” as an indicator of racism, and that’s simply not something I can go with.

Rather, I’d suggest that when a disparate impact is found, we need to simply ask first “is this intentional?”, and next “is the problem the standard, or the behavior of those subject to it?”. Calling people “racist” for things that inadvertently work against certain groups is simply a way to alienate people.

identity refer to the way that White people,
their customs, culture and beliefs operate as the
standard by which all other groups are compared.
Whiteness is also at the core of understanding
race in America. Whiteness and the normalization
of White racial identity throughout America’s
history have created a culture where non-White
persons are seen as inferior or abnormal.

That’s taken from the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which goes on to say,

Thinking about race is very different for nonwhite persons living in America. People of color must always consider their racial identity, whatever the situation, due to the systemic and interpersonal racism that still exists.

I know of numerous people of color who do not agree with that statement. They then say this:

Whiteness (and its accepted normality) also exist as everyday microaggressions toward people of color.

That sounds like something for which I should apologize, does it not?
