As I said, I don’t particularly care about who is and who isn’t a villain. I just don’t find re-hashes of fratricidal Baptist fundamentalist wars edifying. I find them depressing and demoralizing. As I also said, I’ll buy and read the book sometime this year. I hope it is edifying. To the extent it avoids chronicling the cannibalistic Baptist fundy wars of the mid-20th century, I’ll enjoy it.

after reading the book, I can say Dr. Oats doesn’t rehash the fights. Its focus is on the Cedarholms and their life of ministry. It mentions what’s going on around them but not to rehash the controversy. More in my report later.

From the book, I learned the proximate cause of the Cedarholm\Clearwaters rift was the campusing of a pair of male students. The parents appealed to friends on Pillsbury’s Board. The board members went to Clearwaters for a reversal. Cedarholm said no. Dr. Oats makes the point that Dr. Cedarholm had never worked “for” anybody. So, we’re off to the races.

It ended thirty + years ago. I don’t know where the animus towards Dr. C comes from. In my four years of Chapel at MBBC (77-81), I can only remember him speaking negatively about four men, Jerry Falwell and the Pseudo-Fundamentalists, Jack van Impe, Bill Gothard and his Basic Youth stuff, and Billy Graham.

read the book and learn. FWIW, I was Dr. C’s driver when I was in school. So, I knew him a little better than most. It’s just that your posts have had a negative tinge to them.

I plan to read the book. I’m the editor who posted this filing. As I said above, to the extent it avoids chronicling the fratricidal fundy wars of yesteryear and avoiding hagiography, I will enjoy it very much.

Yeah, that’s pretty much how my dad described it to me. He was at Pills when it all went down and found himself following Dr. C to Wttn that fall. He told me the story a few years back, and I’m looking forward to reading more about the Cedarholms when I get a chance to pick up the book.

NewRegretfully, the full story

Fri, 04/05/19

Regretfully, the full story really didn’t make it out into general circulation. I look at is as the same way Steve Jobs was forced from Apple back in the day. All I knew as a Californian was Pillsbury never played MBBC in any varsity sport.

Sorry! I finished it this past summer. I read it in one day. I thought it was an excellent book to see an “insider’s” perspective on the CBA splits. In that respect, it complements Bauder and Delnay’s book. The biography itself is hagiographic, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Nobody will mistake it for an unbiased work. It was an enjoyable read, as long as you know what you’re getting.
