NewWhite House praises

Mon, 04/29/13

http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2013/04/29/white-house-praises-nbas-jason…

President Barack Obama‘s chief spokesman, Jay Carney, said “I can certainly tell you that here at the White House, you know, we view that as another example of the progress that has been made and the evolution that has been taking place in this country and commend him for his courage and support him.” Mr. Carney said he hasn’t yet talked with Mr. Obama about the basketball player’s announcement.

Mr. Obama became the first sitting president to endorse gay marriage in 2012 and is a fan of basketball. While Mr. Collins plays for the Washington Wizards, Mr. Obama is a Chicago Bulls fan.

Mr. Collins has already gotten presidential support. Bill Clinton, in one of just a handful of tweets he’s sent since starting on Twitter, said “I’m proud to call Jason Collins a friend.” He included a link to a statement where he said “Jason’s announcement today is an important moment for professional sports and in the history of the LGBT community.”

Is that what we should do? Go around introducing ourselves as ‘monogamous heterosexuals’?

It’s worse than going to a nursing home and hearing about bunions and hemorrhoids and watching people chew without their dentures in. We really don’t need to know some stuff about people. Has anyone read The Light of Other Days by Stephen Baxter/Arthur C. Clarke? Like seriously, I think we are headed that way, as soon as someone invents a time viewer. Smiley

We could go around being as unbelievably annoying as Anderson Cooper! And wouldn’t that be fun? Smiley;

NewAn interesting side note

This was an interesting article where a leader in the “Gay Rights” movement is very honest that the issue of pushing gay rights isn’t about equality of the marriage relationship. It is rather the destruction of the institution of marriage.

He’s a bench player who’s averaging less than a point a game for one of the worst teams in the NBA. Now, anyone who cuts him will be open to charges of discrimination.

I have to give Chris Broussard a lot of credit for being public like this and calling homosexuality a sin. It’s very, very refreshing and encouraging for someone in the media to not only agree with “Christians”, but to announce publicly that homosexuality is a sin and that it merits God’s wrath.

ESPN will probably suspend him pronto, but Broussard is doing what God says to do - stand for truth. Good for him.

"Our task today is to tell people — who no longer know what sin is...no longer see themselves as sinners, and no longer have room for these categories — that Christ died for sins of which they do not think they’re guilty." - David Wells

This is the full quote in the larger context:

It almost looks to me, watching the clip, as if ESPN was intentionally set the conversation up- placing him against LZ Granderson, a sportswriter who is openly homosexual.

NewESPN's apology

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/jason-collins-espn-apologizes-chr…

“We regret that a respectful discussion of personal viewpoints became a distraction from today’s news. ESPN is fully committed to diversity and welcomes Jason Collins’ announcement.”

Well, could have been much stronger against Broussard, I would think.

Under the new bargaining agreement, the minimum salary for a player that has been in the league as long as Collins has is just north of $1.3 million per year. Even for the NBA, that’s a lot of money for the very limited production that he, as a 34 year old journeyman center, brings to a team. That same production, or even better production, can be had for just under $500 grand by signing a rookie.

In other words, the timing of his announcement seems odd to me. Professionally, what is he risking? His career was basically over. Now an owner with an eye to getting his name in the history books and an understanding of the potential new market for #98 jerseys will find that $1.3 million price tag a steal. Bury him on the bench, trot him out for junk time, and go down in history.

The media has been wanting this story so very badly that they’ve thrown any pretense of journalistic integrity out the window. The Jackie Robinson comparisons are shameful, and not just for the moral reasons.

Also, what happens if my favorite team signs him? Am I allowed to criticize the signing based on purely b-ball reasons without being labeled a homophobe? I doubt it.

Now’s a good time to begin passing out copies of D.A. Carson’s The Intolerance of Tolerance.
