“After I started selling those [“modest is hottest” ] shirts, I realized that girls weren’t just buying it because they wanted a cute T-shirt or a souvenir … . They really wanted to support that it’s possible to live a life of modesty that pleases God and still look cute and trendy.” Baptist Standard

Describing modest as ‘hot’ seems a bit of an oxymoron.

I know what you are saying, Susan…if you understand “hot” to mean sexually attractive, but I’ve heard the word used to mean “popular” and also to just mean something is “cool” (which is kinda funny if you think about it). In this case, I’m guessing the rhyming makes for a catchy slogan. ‘Course, I’d be curious as to exactly how they are defining modesty.

Seems like an attempt to blend opposites. Meek & quiet meets “cute & trendy”. It might take me awhile to process that- I have van lag from spending 10 hours traveling across MD, WV, PA, and OH yesterday. :)

Also, what do you do as a woman when a guy is reading the front of your shirt? Another contradictory idea, IMO.

NewWhy must we use slogans to

Why must we use slogans to teach this type of truth. It seems like true modesty is about not proclaiming modesty but rather modeling it. I can see what is next “spiritual is sexy” “Godliness is da bomb” (I don’t mean any crudeness, but rather it seems rather silly to try to mix spiritual truth with worldly slogans and phrases.) It sends a mixed message. Maybe I am just too sensitive, but I would be embarrassed if I saw young girls in our church wearing clothing with those kinds of slogans. I know hot doesn’t just mean sexual to kids, but who popularized the word? Was it not Paris Hilton along with her blatantly immoral standards?
