Types of sermons can be defined with numerous variations, subdivisions, and hybrids. In this poll, we are asking which style your church features MOST. Few pastors, for example, always preach expository sermons — but many mostly do. Here are our definitions:

Expository preaching — can involved several verses, a paragraph, chapters, or even section of a Biblical book. Can be “book by book” or a series on a section of a book or a one time paragraph/section. The idea here is that the main idea of the text is the main idea of the sermon. The passage is both exposited (interpreted based upon how it ties together) and applied.

Textual sermon — A verse or two or at most three verses are elaborated upon, sometimes leading to further investigation of the topics found in those verses. Some stay close to the text while others can intentionally or unintentionally lead to rabbit trails.

Topical sermon — A subject or part of a subject is elaborated upon using a variety of verses from different portions of Scripture.

Evangelistic sermon — The texts or topics are developed to lead to an evangelistic conclusion and perhaps call for a decision of faith (not necessarily an “invitation”).

Mixed means that half the Sundays no one style prevails.

Please choose the type that is CLOSEST to what you hear on a give Sunday. As mentioned, there are many hybids and certainly differing levels of depth.
