SharperIron will be offline for a few days starting Thanksgiving Day and extending through the weekend. A variety of updates will be installed and parts of the site might be “under construction” for a while the following week as well. However, things should be mostly functioning as normal on Monday 12/2.

Those debates will always be with us, but if the break slows them down a bit, it might help everyone cool off, or at least take a breather! :)

will we be getting a phone app?

Much is uncertain. This might end up only being a minor update, depending on available time and how the process goes. If we’re able to move to Drupal 7, the new theme will be able to detect the sort of device you’re looking at and adapt, so things should at least look and function better on a phone.

As for a phone app… I’m not even sure what the word “app” means anymore. It doesn’t seem to mean what it used to…. In your view, what would have to exist to constitute an “app”? (SmartPhone world is one I have not yet entered, so I’m stuck in an older paradigm. There’s a downside to that of course. The upside: I’ve never spent more than $50 for a phone)

The two most likely scenarios for next week:

  • Site goes to Drupal 7 and is back on line but limping a bit for a while (there is still stuff that isn’t available in D7 and has to be replaced with an alternative, so… learning curve, lots of reconfig, that sort of thing. Probably still worth it though. There’s a lot of good stuff in D7. It’ll just take a while to learn to make good use of it.)
  • Site doesn’t make it to Drupal 7, gets mostly under-the-hood updates… and you will see almost no visible changes at all.

(In other words, there’s the headache scenario and the yawn scenario :) )

I guess, what we ought to do, is make lots of really grandiose promises. Pile on superlatives, raise expectations to the level of fantasy, then deliver the opposite extreme. :D

I think we can avoid the opposite extreme part, but I can crank out glittering generalities. The next update to SharperIron will:

  • Produce total peace among all fundamentalists and their critics on the topic of church music
  • Remove all ambiguity from the principles and practice of “ecclesiastical separation”
  • Make everyone want to proudly an publicly identify as “fundamentalist,” especially those under 50 years of age
  • Begin a new era of financial prosperity for struggling fundamentalist-heritage institutions
  • Double the enrollment of every fundamental Bible college
  • Large evangelical ministries and leaders will beg to be included in our new “fundamentalist ideology exchanges”
  • We’ll add layers of beauracracy to everything in your life and the result will be that everything in your life is better yet somehow cheaper at the same time

(And for future reference: I had no idea the new site was not ready to launch. Nobody told me. And I didn’t ask because I was too busy telling you how awesome it will be.)
