I would add something here; if a pastor is concentrating on getting rears in pews, men in the staff, and checks in the plate, he will fail to speak to controversial issues even if he tries. The trick is that if we are to take stands that are controversial, we need an ongoing, mentoring relationship like that enjoyed by Christ and the disciples. You cannot do that if your only interaction with the 10,000 rear ends that fill your pews interact with you only on Sunday morning and by reading your blog and tweets.
