….especially as AIG argues that to reach people, we need to start with Genesis, and I’d argue that to recover the vitality of a church, it’s essential to preach the Gospels. I hope I’m painting with a brush which is far too broad here, but some things I’ve seen suggest to me that the bane of many churches is an over-emphasis on partial understanding of the Epistles with a neglect of the Gospels and the character of Christ.

Now if I posit that I’m working with believers who are coming from less-sound churches to form a doctrinally sound church, I’m with the author here. If I’m trying to reach a community with few believers, though, I wonder if a mixture of Gospel and Genesis preaching might be more effective–this is who Jesus is, this is why you want to get to know Him.

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.

Doesn’t matter which book you preach. Just preach Christ.

Tyler is a pastor in Olympia, WA and works in State government.
