I’m not holding my breath either, but I am hopeful that the rebukes from people like his nephew and Francis Chan may be bearing fruit—remember Chan at least said he spoke at one of Hinn’s conferences particularly for that purpose. Now the question; does Hinn apologize for fake “healings”, too? Time will tell…

I agree. Will this happen, too? Also, will he return any of the money he wrongfully obtained? And how *does* he define the gospel?

When Hinn states “The Holy Ghost is just fed up with it”, we know from that that Hinn is still claiming in effect to be a prophet. So his repentance is partial at best at this point. I’m glad it’s gotten as far as it has, but he has a ways to go.

There’s a basic integrity problem with the whole ministry model (constant alleged miracles etc.). And, yes, it would be more meaningful if he showed some understanding of what the gospel is and how his message has conflicted with it.

Truth stranger than fiction?

There’s word from Hinn’s nephew on the matter, now. The timing is interesting, by the way: Benny’s nephew has recently released a book decrying the prosperity gospel phenomenon and his uncle in particular.

“The timing is interesting”

Maybe the book prompting the retraction perhaps? Somehow Zaccheus comes to mind, as someone who had used fraud to become rich, and then after encountering Christ repaid those he had defrauded four-fold. I will wait to see what Hinn does with the fortune he has amassed from the wallets of physically and/or financially broken people.

Mortification of Spin did a terrific interview with Costi Hinn a few weeks ago on what the “inside” of the prosperity gospel was like and his turning to Christ. It’s a real blessing and encouragement.

God can work in people’s lives. We know a lot of “confessions” are fake, but let’s not embrace a cynical attitude. I, for one, am hopeful but willing to give him the chance to prove himself.

Will he ever become SI material? No. But he might move toward a more mainstream evangelical approach.
