“I once paid a visit to one of the most mega of America’s megachurches…. I went into this modern worship situation with as open a mind as I could muster. I left perplexed. I was perplexed not by what was said or done in the service as much as what was left unsaid and undone.” - C.Leaders

NewThe whole kit and caboodle missing?

If one eliminated all five things Challies mentions--prayer, Scripture reading, expository preaching, confession of sin & assurance of pardon, and congregational singing--from my church, we'd basically be left with announcements.

It's probably not quite that bad, but there is a point where you've got to ask, along with the late Clara Peller, "Where's the beef?".

One of the things I noticed right away when I started getting involved in the church where I serve now: We have a lot of prayer in the service, and a lot of different people doing it. They put a lot of thought into it, too, so it’s not a “I’m on the spot so I’ll say what I usually do when that happens” situation. Mostly. Sometimes that happens, too.

Views expressed are always my own and not my employer's, my church's, my family's, my neighbors', or my pets'. The house plants have authorized me to speak for them, however, and they always agree with me.
