If the Church Did Its Job, Would the Parachurch Exist?

“I answer that the parachurch doesn’t exist because the church has failed. It exists because God’s commands naturally generate institutions beyond family, church, and state. Proving that starts with clarifying terms.” - TGC

NewI don't think parachurch…

Mon, 11/02/26

I don't think parachurch organizations, are in and of themselves unbiblical. My concerns with parachurch organizations are:

  • Many times they overstep their bounds because churches are more interested in offloading their responsibilities to a parachurch organization. Many mission boards operate outside of the realm of the local church and only tacitly need the local church involvement. Many churches are fine with just writing a check to the mission board and saying that they "support missions".
  • Many parachurch organizations spend a lot of energy on dealing with their internal organizational model. They build up such a large structure with so many committees, and then deal with infighting.
  • Many parachurch organizations are a "dumping" ground for pastors who are too old. They aren't run by adept leaders, but instead retired people from other organizations.
  • Many parachurch organizations spend an inordinate amount of funds on the operating of the parachurch organization, they don't recognize it, and supporting churches either don't realize or are disengaged.
